Insurance Regulator & Lawyer

Jay
Angoff

Let’s be honest: When we were kids, didn’t we all want
to grow up to be insurance regulators?

Well, I’ve been living the dream. I’ve been the Insurance Commissioner of Missouri, Deputy Insurance Commissioner of New Jersey, and Director of Obamacare implementation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

And when I haven’t been an insurance regulator, I’ve been an insurance (or anti-insurance) lawyer, working on such exciting topics as:

Price optimization!
Contingent commissions!
Risk-based capital ratios!
Incurred but not reported reserves!
Current, indicated and selected relativities!
The insurable interest rule!
Community rating!
Vexatious refusal to pay claims!
Fronting arrangements!
And many, many more.

Kidding aside, if you are involved in or are thinking about getting involved in litigation involving insurance, and would like to consult with someone with decades of experience regulating and litigating with insurance companies, I’d be happy to consult with you—I’ve just retired from my law firm. I’ve done most of my work in the past on behalf of individuals suing or being screwed by insurance companies, and I’d like to continue to do that type of work. On the other hand, I once did a report for an insurer that insured a homeowner whose house blew up because he had effectively turned his basement into a munitions dump. I was happy to help the insurance company in that matter and I’m happy to help insurers on other matters if I think they’re right.

So if you think you might need a consulting or testifying expert in connection with an insurance matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
